What the SAA-C03 Actually Tests
Most candidates make the mistake of trying to memorise every AWS service. That is the wrong approach. The SAA-C03 tests your ability to design solutions — not recite definitions.
Every question puts you in the shoes of a solutions architect facing a real business problem. You will be asked to choose between multiple plausible options and pick the one that best meets the requirements — whether that means lowest cost, highest availability, most secure, or most operationally efficient.
The four exam domains are:
- Design Secure Architectures (30%) IAM policies, encryption, VPC security, secure access to AWS services, and protecting data at rest and in transit.
- Design Resilient Architectures (26%) Multi-AZ and multi-region designs, Auto Scaling, Elastic Load Balancing, disaster recovery strategies, and decoupled architecture using SQS and SNS.
- Design High-Performing Architectures (24%) Choosing the right compute, storage, database, and networking services for performance-sensitive workloads. Caching with ElastiCache, CloudFront, and more.
- Design Cost-Optimised Architectures (20%) Spot instances, Reserved Instances, S3 storage classes, cost-aware architectural patterns, and right-sizing.
Common Mistakes Candidates Make
Skipping hands-on practice. This exam is not passable by reading alone. If you have never deployed an EC2 instance, configured a VPC, or set up an S3 bucket policy, the scenario questions will feel abstract and confusing.
Studying services in isolation. The exam constantly asks you to combine services — EC2 with Auto Scaling and ALB, RDS with Multi-AZ and Read Replicas, S3 with CloudFront and Lambda. Study workflows, not just individual services.
Ignoring the "most cost-effective" qualifier. A large proportion of SAA-C03 questions have multiple technically correct answers. The one AWS wants is usually the most cost-effective or least operationally complex option. Train yourself to spot these keywords.
Running out of time. The exam gives you 130 minutes for 65 questions — roughly 2 minutes per question. Many candidates spend too long on hard questions early and run out of time at the end. Practice time management with full-length mock exams.

Read every question twice. The difference between the right and wrong answer often comes down to a single word — "most cost-effective," "least operational overhead," "highly available."

Flag and move on. If you are stuck after 90 seconds, flag the question, make your best guess, and come back. Do not let one hard question derail your timing.
